CREATING FULL BACKUP OF YOUR WINDOWS 10 COMPUTER

Backing up the data of the entire system is the best strategy to protect your files from corrupting during hardware failure, malware, and software issues. If you don’t create backups regularly you may lose your important documents, photos and configurations that you may have spent many hours setting up.

In Windows 10 there are various methods for creating backups such as manually copy files to external storage, store files in OneDrive and use third-party backup solutions. Although if you don’t want to use the third-party method, you can create a full backup by using the legacy system image backup tool.
A system image is another name for full backup because it is a copy of everything stored on your PC, including your files, settings, apps and Windows 10 installation. The main benefit of using this method is that you can easily use it to restore your entire system.

CREATE BACKUP WITH SYSTEM IMAGE TOOL ON WINDOWS 10

The system image tool helps you to save your backup in different locations like a network folder or secondary hard drive.
Follow the given below steps to create a full backup of Windows 10 using the system image tool.
  • Step 1: First, open the “Settings”.
  • Step 2: Click on “Update & Security” and then click on “Backup
  • Step 3: Click on the “Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” option under "Looking for an older backup?" section
  • Step 4: Click on the “Create a system image” option on the left pane.

  • Step 5: Select the “On a hard disk” option under "Where do you want to save the backup?" section.
  • Step 6: Use the "On a hard disk" drop-down menu to select the storage location for saving the full backup of Windows 10.
  • Step 7: Click on the “Next” button.
  • Step 8: If you want you can also select any additional drives for the backup.
  • Step 9: Click on the “Next” button.
  • Step 10: Now, click on the “Start Backup” button.
  • Step 11: Then, click on the “No” button.
Note: After completing the process, you will see an option to create a system repair disc, but nowadays most of the devices do not include an optical disk drive so you can skip the prompt. If you ever want to restore a backup, you can use a bootable USB flash drive to access the recovery environment.
  • Step 12: Click on the close button
Once you complete the given steps the system image tool will create a backup of your computer which will include everything on your main hard drive, system reserved partition and the additional drives that you have selected during the process.
This system image backup tool uses “Shadow Copy Technology” that allows it to continue backing up even if your files are open and apps are running which means you can continue doing your work during the process. At last, disconnect the external drive from the backup and store it in a safe place.

RESTORE BACKUP WITH SYSTEM IMAGE TOOL ON WINDOWS 10

If you are facing any issue while starting your computer or you are replacing your main hard drive then you can use the backup to restore your system to a working condition.
Follow the given below steps to restore a backup on Windows 10 using system image tool.
  • Step 1: First, connect the backup drive to your computer.
  • Step 2: Then, insert the Windows 10 USB bootable drive or the disc containing system repair files to the device and start the device.
Note: If your PC is facing a problem in booting into the Windows Setup wizard, then change the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings of your PC. Although these settings are different for different manufacturers therefore always check your computer support manufacturer website for specific details.
  • Step 3: Click on the “Next” button on the "Windows Setup" page.
  • Step 4: Click on the “Repair your computer” option at the bottom-left corner.

  •  Step 5: Click on the “Troubleshoot” option.
  •  Step 6: Click on the “System Image Recovery” option.
  •  Step 7: Click on the “Windows 10” as a target operating system.
  •  Step 8: Select the “Use the latest available system image” option on the "Re-image your computer" page.
Note: If you have multiple backups and you want to restore an older copy then you can use the "Select a system image" option.
  •  Step 9: Click on the “Next” button.
  •  Step 10: Select the “Format and repartition disks” option if you're restoring a backup to a new hard drive before restoring the backup.
Note: While selecting this option, you can also use the “Exclude disks” option to prevent the other devices connected to your PC from formatting.
  • Step 11: Again, click on the “Next” button
  • Step 12: Click on the “Finish” button

  • Step 13: Click on the “Yes” button.
Once you complete the given steps, the process of recovering the device using the previous backup will start. Time to finish the restoration will depend on the amount of data and hardware configuration. While restoring the device from a backup, you need to know that if there will be any interruption or failure it will make the system unusable. So to get rid of such problems make sure that your computer is connected to a battery backup and if you have a laptop then it should be connected to a power source.
After completing the restoration, if it’s been a long time when you have created the full backup, it’s recommended to go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on the “Check for Updates” button to download the latest security patches.
CONCLUSION:-

There are several reasons for creating backups on Windows 10. For example, if you want to update your system to a new version of Windows 10, then creating a backup will be helpful if something goes wrong during updating. It is always advised to take backups daily so that you can easily recover your important files and photos lost due to hardware failure and any other problem. As you can only restore the data before the last backup and you cannot restore the data created after the backup.
The idea behind designing the System Image Backup tool is to recover the entire system and not the files, settings and apps individually. So, if you want to take back up of your files you have to use system image tool in combination with file history or OneDrive.
